Filed your Income Tax Return? But, Forgot to e-verify ????
Wondering what to do next? No need to worry, in this blog post we will tell you how you can e-verify the returns for the prior years for which the time has lapsed.
Most of us are aware that income tax return has to be verified within 120 days of filing ITR, to complete the process of income tax return filing. Forgetting to verify can land us in big trouble as the return filed would be declared invalid by the Income Tax Department.
But what we don't know is that quite recently, income tax department has opened its doors and started accepting the e-verification of ITR of earlier years and current year even after the lapse of 120 days time.
Yes, you heard it Right!
Let us show you stepwise how e-verification can be done for the earlier years for which the time limit of 120 days had already passed a long time back –
Step 1: Log into your account to Income Tax e-Filing Website. Click here
Step 2: Click on My Account tab and select E-Verify Return option from the drop-down menu. Then the years for which ITR verification is pending would be displayed on the screen.
Step 3 : As you click on the option e-verify displayed in the above screen, the screen with various options as listed below will come up to e-verify the ITR.
Option 1 I already have an EVC to e-Verify my return.
Option 2 I do not have an EVC and I would like to generate EVC to e-Verify my return.
Option 3 I would like to generate Aadhaar OTP to e-Verify my return.
To understand the options in detail, Please Refer here
Step 4: Now, when we will select any of the above-listed options for e-verification, a pop would come asking the reason for delay along with the OTP or EVC as the case may be.
Step 5: Some specific reasons for the delay are stated in the drop-down shown in below screen by the income tax department. They are namely :
- ITR V was sent earlier by post but not received by CPC
- Not aware that the ITR-V sent to CPC was rejected for technical reasons
- Not aware of e-verification process
- Not aware that signed ITR V to be sent to CPC
- Others
If you select the option – Others from the above options, then you have to enter your reason in the column – Remarks.
Select the appropriate one and enter the OTP or EVC as the case may be. Then, you are done with the e-verification.
Hope, after reading this article you must have understood that the process is same as earlier just the difference is marked by the mentioning of reasons for the delay. However, select the reason carefully.
