Note: After generating the EVC, you will have to login at the Income Tax eFiling portal, and insert the code there in order to successfully e verify your Income Tax Return.
Income tax department provides the taxpayer with 2 ways to e verify ITR i.e. either online or offline. Offline verification means posting ITR V printout to CPC, Bengaluru. On another hand, Online Verification means verifying via Net Banking or ATM etc.
As per Income Tax Act, ITR should be verified within 30 days of filing the return. And it should be complied mandatorily because checking of ITR is done only after it has been verified. In case you fail to verify return within the given time period then it will be considered as invalid. Due to that, you’ll have to file a fresh return from the beginning.
If Income Tax Return is verified Physically i.e. using offline mode; then it is simple verification of ITR. However, when Income Tax Return is verified using Online methods then its called e verification.
It is up to the taxpayer whether he/she wants to verify ITR online or offline. However, for the sake of simplicity, and convenience it is recommended to verify ITR online.
Verification of ITR using the Electronic Verification Code (EVC) is called as EVC Verification.
There are 4 ways to generate an EVC to e verify income tax return, which are as follows:
ITR V or ITR Verification is a 1 page form which serves as a proof that your Income Tax Return has been filed with the Income Tax Department.
Basically, there are two types of ITR V acknowledgment, the first one is pre e verification (ITR V Form) & second one is post e verification (ITR V Acknowledgement).
The first image in the file attached below is of ITR which has not been verified & the next one is the e-verified ITR. As it is visible in the e verified ITR, at bottom a red-line is given “DO NOT SEND THIS ACKNOWLEDGEMENT TO CPC, BENGALURU”.
This line indicates & serves as proof of ITR e verification. It is important to note that such a line will only be shown when the income tax return is e-verified (i.e. not in case of offline verification by sending a post to CPC).
Yes, you can send ITR V to CPC, Bengaluru using either Ordinary Post or Speed Post. However, the option to post via Courier, is not allowed.
After filing Income Tax Return, it is mandatory for everyone to verify return (either offline or online) within 30 days of filing. If the ITR V is not verified within 30 days then your return will be considered as invalid & you’ll have to file a fresh return from the beginning. A belated returns fee will be applicable u/s 234F.
You can check the status of ITR V by visiting the Income Tax India page & fill-in the relevant details.
Acknowledgment of ITR V depends upon the method you have opted for verifying ITR.
If your ITR V receipt status shows “ITR-V Rejected” then in such a case, click on the Acknowledgement Number & the reason for ITR V rejection will be shown.
ITR V can be rejected for various reasons like you may have sent return for verification after 30 days or ITR V was folded or stapled etc. Make sure that you correct the mistake & resend ITR V (other than the case where 30 days limit has been exceeded).
It is highly recommended for taxpayers to download & save ITR V acknowledgment. Although it is available every time on income tax filing website, it is suggested to keep it handy & therefore download it now.
