Check FSSAI Application Status

Updated on: 05 Jan, 2024 11:57 AM

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), established in 2006 under the Food Safety and Standards Act, is the regulatory body responsible for ensuring safe food practices and high-quality, edible products across India. It exerts its authority by directing the activities of Food Business Operators (FBOs), including manufacturers and retailers.

FSSAI registration is mandatory for all FBOs operating within India. Upon successful registration, the FSSAI issues a Registration/License containing a unique 14-digit food license number and the FSSAI logo. FBOs are obligated to display this license number on their food products or within their production or restaurant premises. This license serves as a tangible verification of the food products' compliance with safety standards and their expediency for consumption.

Types of FSSAI Registration or License for Food Business Operators

Before knowing how to check the status of FSSAI registration or license, it's important to have a fundamental understanding of the three main types of registration or license. Types of registration or license depend on the scale and nature of the business.

FSSAI Basic Registration: This mandatory registration applies to Food Business Operators (FBOs) with an annual turnover not exceeding ₹12 Lakh. Ideal for micro-enterprises like sweets shops, temporary stalls, Petty food retailers, and hawkers, the Basic Registration is the most straightforward and affordable option.

State License: Businesses with an annual turnover between ₹12 Lakh and ₹20 crore fall under the domain of the FSSAI State License. This category covers restaurants, dairy processing units, and bakeries. Compared to the Basic Registration, obtaining a State License involves greater complexity and associated costs.

Central License: FBOs exceeding an annual turnover of ₹20 crore require the FSSAI Central License. This license caters to prominent entities like food importers, exporters, large-scale food manufacturers, and national government agencies involved in food regulation. Obtaining and maintaining a Central License represents the most intricate and expensive of the three categories.
