How to check EPF Account Balance & Statements Online?

EPFO has eased the process of checking an employee's provident fund balance over the years. PF balance checks can now be done online, and the time taken for the procedure has been reduced considerably. Several methods are available to an individual to check his/her EPF balance, some of which are explained in the article below.

How to Check the Provident Fund (PF) Balance Status?

Gone are the days when you had to wait for your employer to tell your EPF (Employee Provident Fund), popularly known as the “PF” balance, at the end of the year. Now, checking your PF balance has become super easy. The government has introduced various ways through which you can check your PF Balance online anywhere, anytime. It can be done without having a UAN number through a missed call or SMS service, or in case you have a UAN, then the PF balance can be checked by making a successful login to the EPFO portal, EPFO App, and UMANG App.

In this post, we will explain you various means along with the process for knowing your PF Balance with the EPFO (Employee Provident Fund Organization) -


PF Balance Check Without UAN Number

The balance of your provident fund account can be checked even without using the UAN number. This can be done either through a miss call facility or by sending a message as per the process described below.

By just giving a missed call to mobile number 9966044425 from your registered Mobile number you can know your PF balance without the UAN number. The details of last contribution and PF Balance are sent on your registered number free of cost.

A. What will happen after giving the missed call?

The call will automatically get disconnected after two rings.

B. Who can enjoy this facility?

  • Only the Members registered on the UAN portal can get their details.
  • Registered Mobile Number should be activated with UAN at Unified Portal.
  • Anyone of the following KYC must be done against your UAN.
    a. Bank A/c Number
    b. Aadhaar
    c. PAN

PF Balance Check Using Short Code SMS Service

By sending an SMS at 7738299899 from your registered mobile number you can know your latest PF contribution and balance available. The best part is that this facility is available in 10 languages-English (default) and Hindi, Punjabi, Gujarati, Marathi, Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, and Bengali.

What SMS needs to be sent to check the balance?

SMS Text- “EPFOHO UAN”
SMS Number – 7738299899
For getting the SMS in any of the languages other than English, the first three characters of the preferred language needs to be added after UAN.
For example, If you want to receive an SMS in Telugu, then the SMS to be sent will be “EPFOHO UAN TEL” to 7738299899.

What will happen after sending an SMS?

You will receive an SMS from EPFO containing the following details – last PF contribution and balance details along with available KYC information.

UAN-activated Members whose KYC is done. In other words, it is the same as using the missed call facility.


PF Balance Check With UAN Number

You can check your PF account balance online anytime by using either of the three options. Namely, EPFO Portal, EPFO App, and UMANG App. Read below for the steps described below -


PF Balance Check Using EPFO

The EPFO has given two options to its members to check PF Balance-

3.1 It’s own portal, i.e., from Employee’s Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO)
3.2 It’s App– EPFO m-sewa

Let’s understand the process and requirements to use –

Employee’s Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) Portal-

It’s the most popular way of PF Balance check with UAN number. In order to check the EPF balance, you need to make sure that your UAN (Universal Account Number). UAN is a unique number of identification provided to the employees enrolled under the EPF scheme. Employees can have only one UAN in their entire life irrespective of the company they are working in. Follow the below steps to understand the workings of the EPFO portal after activating your UAN number -

  • Step 1: Go to the EPF portal and click on the ‘e-Passbook’ option on the homepage. e-Passbook
  • Step 2: Enter your UAN number, password, and captcha, then click the ‘Sign In’ button. Enter your UAN number
  • Step 3: Click on the ‘Passbook’. Passbook
  • Step 4: Select the ‘Member ID’ to display your PF details on the screen. Member ID
  • Step 5: Print the passbook by clicking the ‘Download as PDF’ option. Download as PDF

Who Can Not Check the Balance from EPFO Portal?

  • Members of establishments who are exempt under the EPF Scheme, 1952 are exempt from the passbook facility, and if you still try to log in to your account you will get the message informing you as it belongs to the exempted establishment hence passbook is not available.
  • Members not having their UAN activated or registered on the EPF portal cannot check their EPFO balance from the portal.
  • The EPF balance can only be viewed after 6 hours of registering on the EPFO portal.
  • Members of exempted establishments and private trusts cannot view the EPFO balance.

PF Balance Check Using UMANG App/EPFO App

UMANG(Unified Mobile APP for New Governance) is a government app which provides a single platform to all Indian Citizens to access e-Gov services of Central, State and Local Government bodies and other citizen centric services. By using this app you can check the PF Balance.

How to Use UMANG for PF?

For using The UMANG APP, you need to first download it from the UMANG website or from the play/app stores or by giving a missed call 9718397183.

Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance. Besides checking EPF balances, the app allows you to file and track claims. Members must complete a one-time registration using their UAN-registered cellphone number to access the app.

Here’s how to use the UMANG app to view your EPF transactions:

  • Step 1: Download the UMANG app from the Google Play Store or App Store.
  • Step 2: Log in to the UMANG app by clicking on the profile picture. Select ‘Services’ and then click on the ‘Social Security’ option.
  • Step 3: Select ‘EPFO’ from the list of services.
  • Step 4: Under ‘Employee Centric Service’, click on ‘View Passbook’.
  • Step 5: Enter your UAN number and click on ‘Get OTP’.
  • Step 6: Enter the OTP received on your mobile and click the ‘Submit’ button.
  • Step 7: Select the company for which you want to view and download the EPF passbook.
  • Step 8: The passbook will be displayed on the screen.
  • Step 9: Click the ‘Download’ button to download the EPF passbook.

Is E-Nomination Mandatory for EPF Account?

While it is not mandatory to complete E-nomination for your PF account, it is advised to complete it so that your PF account balance can be withdrawn and used by your loved ones in the event of your death.


How to Submit an E-Nomination for EPFO?

  • Visit the UAN Member e-Sewa portal.
  • Enter your UAN number, password, captcha code, and click the ‘Sign In’ button.
  • Select the ‘E-nomination’ option under the ‘Manage’ tab. Click on ‘Enter new nomination’.
  • When the ‘Provide Details’ tab appears, click the ‘Proceed’ button.
  • Click ‘Yes’ to update the family declaration.
  • Add the family member’s details in the e-nomination form by clicking ‘Add Family Details’.
  • You can add more than one nominee. Click on ‘Nomination Details’ to declare the total amount of shares. Click ‘Save EPF Nomination’.
  • Finally, click ‘E-sign’ to generate an OTP and submit the OTP received on your mobile number linked with Aadhaar.

The e-nomination process is now complete.


How to Check EPF Balance for Exempted Establishments?

  • Employees of exempted establishments or private trusts cannot view their EPF balance on the EPFO portal.
  • For these employees, the EPF contribution is managed by the company's trust and not by the EPF. Therefore, only the company's trust can provide information about the PF balance.
  • Employees can obtain this information by checking their salary slips, using the company's employee portal, or requesting it from the HR department.

The contribution made to EPF is eligible for a deduction under the Income Tax Act.

Q- Do I need to pay tax if I withdraw PF?

Whether you are required to pay tax while withdrawing money from EPF depends on certain conditions, such as :

  • If the amount withdrawn is less than Rs. 50,000 before completion of 5 years of the service, then no TDS will be deducted.
  • If EPF is withdrawn after 5 years of service, No TDS will be applicable.
  • In case the amount withdrawn is more than 50,000 before the completion of 5 years of service, TDS will be deducted. Further, if you have submitted Form 15G or 15H then TDS will not be deducted.

Q- Can I withdraw money from PF after 5 years?

First of all, it needs to be understood that PF withdrawals after completion of the 5 years of service are tax-free, and no TDS will be deducted from this. Still, you will be required to give a valid reason and documents to support your reason i.e. - education, marriage, medical treatment, etc.


Q- How to withdraw full PF amount?

Only after retirement or at the time of unemployment for more than 2 months will you become eligible to withdraw your full PF amount. Otherwise, you are eligible to withdraw a certain percentage of the amount as per the case. For this, you have two options available- online or offline. Thus, You can withdraw the money from EPF by using online mode through the EPFO portal or by submitting a physical application through offline means.


Q- Is EPF a part of 80C?

Yes, the deduction for EPF can be claimed under Section 80 C while filing Income Tax Return. Under 80 C of the Income Tax Act, you can save up to Rs. 1,50,000 by investing in EPF.
