How to Update PAN Card Correction Online?

A PAN card is an essential document for financial transactions. It is crucial to ensure the PAN card details are accurately updated. If details like your name, date of birth, photo, signature, father's name, Aadhaar, gender, mobile number, email ID, address or contact information are incorrect or changed, it is suggested to rectify and update the PAN card as soon as possible. Let us learn below how to update the PAN card details online.

How to Update PAN Card Correction Online?

How to Update a PAN Card on NSDL e-Gov Portal?

  • Step 1: Visit https://www.protean-tinpan.com, the official website of NSDL E-Governance.
  • Step 2: Under Services Section, Click on “PAN”.
  • Step 3: Click “Apply” under the “Change/Correction in PAN Data” section.
  • Step 4: From the ‘Application Type’ dropdown menu, select ‘Changes or Correction in existing PAN data/Reprint of PAN Card (No changes in Existing PAN Data)’.
  • Step 5: From the ‘Category’ dropdown menu, select the correct category of the assessee, For example, if the PAN is registered in your name, select ‘Individual’ from the list.
  • Step 6: Now, enter your name, date of birth, email address, and mobile number.
  • Step 7: Fill the Captcha and click on “Submit”.
  • Step 8: Your request will be registered and a Token Number will be sent to the email ID provided by you. You can continue the process by clicking the button given below it.
  • Step 9: After you proceed, you will be redirected to the PAN card update form – there are three options to submit your documents, click on “Submit scanned images through e-Sign on NSDL e-gov”.
  • Step 10: Fill in all the necessary details such as your father’s name, mother’s name (optional), your Aadhaar number and click on ‘Next’.
  • Step 11: You will now be redirected to a new page where you can update your address.
  • Step 12: Upload all the necessary documents such as proof of address, proof of age, proof of identity and PAN.
  • Step 13: You need to sign the declaration and click “Submit”.
  • Step 14: You will be redirected to the payment page. Payment can be made through demand draft, net banking, and Credit card/Debit card.
  • Step 15: On successful payment, an acknowledgement slip will be generated. The applicant should take a print of it and send it to the NSDL e-gov office along with the physical proof of documents. Also, affix two photographs in the space provided and sign across it. Write ‘Application for PAN Change’ on top of the envelope along with the acknowledgement number.

How to Update for a PAN Card Name Change On UTITSL?

For PAN card update online via the UTIITSL portal follow the steps given below:

  • Step 1: Visit the UTIITSL website
  • Step 2: Under PAN Card Services click on “Apply PAN Card”
  • Step 3: Under the “Change/Correction in PAN Card” tab, click on “Click to Appy”
  • Step 4: Click on “Apply for Change/Correction in PAN Card Details”
  • Step 5: Choose the mode of document submission, enter your PAN, choose the PAN card mode and click on the “Submit” button.
  • Step 6: Re-enter your PAN and click on “Ok”
  • Step 7: Once the request is registered, you will get a reference number. Click on “Ok”
  • Step 8: Enter your name, address and other details and click on the “Next Step” button
  • Step 9: Enter PAN and verification and click on the “Next Step” button
  • Step 10: Upload the documents and click on the “Submit” button

It usually takes around 15 days for PAN correction/update. You will receive a text message on your registered mobile number when your PAN card is dispatched via post.

For Change in Name (Married Ladies):

How to Check PAN Card Correction Status?

  • Visit either the NSDL PAN website or the UTIITSL website.
  • Select the 'Know Status of PAN application' or 'Track PAN card' option.
  • Provide the 'Acknowledgement Number' along with the Captcha code and click 'Submit'.
  • The status of the PAN card modification application will appear on the screen.

Yes, there is a fee for requesting corrections in your PAN card details. The fee amount depends on several factors, including:

  • Whether you want a physical PAN card or just an e-PAN.

  • Whether your communication address is within India or abroad.

Q- How long does the Income Tax Department take to issue a PAN card?

Earlier, the process would take up to 15 to 20 days. But now, with the latest technology, you can receive a PAN card within 48 hours of submitting the application.


Q- How can I apply for a PAN card offline?

Applying for PAN offline is also possible. Follow the steps to acquire a PAN through offline means:

  • Either download the PAN application form Form 49A from the NSDL/UTIITL website, or you can get the form from the UTIITL agents. Fill out the form, and before submitting, attach all the documents necessary for a PAN card application. You should be able to prove your identity, residence, and birth with the documents attached.
  • Submit the form along with the documents at either the NSDL or UTIITL office and pay the processing fee.
  • You will receive your PAN card within 15 days. For correct delivery, it is important that you mention the correct residential address.

Q- Can I possess two PAN cards?

No, this is against the Income Tax Act of India. No individual can possess more than one PAN card. There is a penalty of Rs. 10,000 if an individual is caught possessing more than one PAN card.


Q- Is there any age limit to apply for a PAN card?

There is no specific age limit requirement to apply for a PAN card. However, people above the age of 18 are preferred. For minors, parents/guardians need to apply on their behalf.


Q- How many photographs are needed for the PAN application form?

If the applicant is an individual, then two recent colored photographs are needed. You need to make sure that your face is clearly visible in the photographs. Photographs should not be damaged in any form. And one of the photographs needs to be cross-signed.


Q- Can I apply for an e-PAN card?

According to the latest revisions, the Income Tax department has come up with a new initiative known as the ‘e-PAN card’ through which you can apply for an e-PAN card. The e-PAN card is the PDF PAN card sent to your registered mail ID on the same day of a successful application to NSDL. Aadhaar is a mandatory pre-requisite to avail of this facility.


Q- I already have a PAN card. Can I still apply for the new one?

Holding two PAN cards is not permitted, as per the Income Tax provisions. Therefore, if you are already having a PAN card, no fresh application shall be made. Instead, you can apply for correction or updation for the change in particulars anytime.
