How to Lock/Unlock Aadhaar Number Online
Aadhar card is linked with each and everything of an individual, giving equal chances to activities like fraud, hacking, etc. In past years, every one of us, or some of us who are known to have suffered from such fraud. All these led to a bad decision in terms of the requirement for linking individual personal data.
Thus, the government took a step to prevent such fraud and cyber hacking by introducing a unique feature. This feature was introduced by UIDAI. The UIDAI stands for the Unique Identification Authority of India, and it came up with this special feature of getting a lock for Aadhar number. The only aim was to be concerned for individuals' data safety and also to prevent such frauds. Due to this locking and unlocking feature by UIDAI, an individual can easily lock and unlock his/her Aadhar card Biaomatrics as per his/her requirement. While you can't disable Aadhaar authentication entirely, you can choose to use OTP-based verification instead of biometric authentication for certain services.
How to Lock/Unlock Aadhaar Online
If you locked your Aadhaar a couple of months ago, you might not be able to perform any type of Aadhaar authentication. To unlock your Aadhaar, visit the myAadhaar portal at https://myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in. Once you unlock your Aadhaar, you can use the same portal to lock your Aadhaar once again and remember, this time it will only lock biometrics and not OTP-based authentication.
Follow the below steps to Lock/Unlock your Aadhaar:
- STEP 1: Open any web browser.
- STEP 2: Go to My Aadhaar Portal https://myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in/ and log in using your Aadhaar number, captcha, and the OTP that you will receive on your registered mobile number.

STEP 3: Once you have successfully logged in, you will be taken to the My Aadhaar Dashboard, as shown in the picture below.
- STEP 4: Click on the “Lock/ Unlock Biometrics.”

STEP 5: Click on the “Next” Button, check the only option available, and click on the “Next” button.

STEP 6: Your Aadhaar biometrics have been successfully locked, and you will see a confirmation message on the screen.
Note:- Use the service from the Dashboard to lock your biometrics (fingerprint, iris, and face). Once locked, they cannot be used for authentication, but OTP-based authentication will still be available.
To unlock your biometrics, return to this page and proceed to "Unlock Biometrics." Upon unlocking, your biometrics (fingerprint, iris, and face) will be re-enabled along with OTP-based authentication.
