How To Upload JSON And File Return On Income Tax Portal
JSON stands for JavaScript Object Notation. In Income Tax filing, a JSON file is simply a structured data file that contains all your ITR details in a format the Income Tax portal can read and process.
Filing your Income Tax Return (ITR) through the Income Tax Department (ITD) portal becomes quick and hassle-free when you already have a JSON file generated.
Step 1: Go to the official portal:
Income Tax e-Filing Portal
- Click Login
- Enter PAN/User ID
- Click Continue
- Enter password and login
Step 2: Go to File Income Tax Return
Navigate to:
e-File → Income Tax Returns → File Income Tax Return
Step 3: Select ‘Offline’ mode, and Select Assessment Year 2025-26 and Filing Type.
Step 4: After Selecting Assessment Year, click on Continue and Select “OFFLINE” Mode as indicated below and Select “Filling Type” as 139(1)- Original return or 139(4)- Belated return(After due date) or 139(5)- Revised return and then “ITR FORM,” i.e., ITR-1 for salary income and to Know Applicability of various ITR form’s please visit https://tax2win.in/guide/itr-forms
Step 5: Attach JSON File
- Click Attach File
- Upload the generated .json file from offline utility/software
- Portal validates the JSON automatically
Step 6: After successful validation:
- Click Proceed to Verification
- After that, proceed with ITR filing.
Step 7: e-Verify Return
Choose any verification method:
- Aadhaar OTP
- Net Banking
- Bank EVC
- DSC (Digital Signature)
Once verified, your ITR filing is complete.
Step 8: You will receive a confirmation email on your registered email ID with your confirmation number and ITR Acknowledgment.
How to Generate JSON File
Download offline utility from:
ITR Utilities Download Page
Then:
- Open utility
- Fill/import data
- Validate all tabs
- Calculate tax
- Click Generate JSON
