How to check Income Tax Return (ITR) Status?

Updated on: 20 Jun, 2025 06:08 PM

It is mandatory as an Indian citizen to file your ITR on the income accrued or earned in India. Besides, the government mandates individuals who earn above ₹2.5 lakh annually to file tax returns. If you earn more than this amount annually, you must file your ITR before the July 31 every year, which is the due date for filing an Income Tax Return every year in case of individuals who are not liable for tax audit. The deadline to file ITR for FY 2024-25 is extended to 15th July 2025. File Now.

There are many benefits of filing ITR and one of them is to receive the income tax refund. This is the amount of money that the government returns to a taxpayer when they have paid more tax during a financial year than what they actually owe.

A series of activities take place after filing an ITR. The return shall be submitted, verified, and processed. How can you be sure that the return you filed has actually reached the Income Tax Department? Let us read to know more.

What are the different types of ITR statuses?

  • Submitted and pending for e-Verification / Verification: This is the status when you have filed your ITR but have not e-Verified it, or your duly signed ITR-V has not been received at CPC yet.
  • Successfully e-Verified / Verified: This is the status when you have submitted and duly e-Verified / Verified your return, but the return has not been processed yet.
  • Processed: This is the status when your return is successfully processed.
  • Defective: This is the status where the department notices some defect in the filed return due to lack of certain essential information as required under law, or some inconsistencies. In such a case, you will receive a notice under section 139(9) asking you to rectify the defect within a specified time limit from the date of receiving notice. If you don't respond to a defective return status, your ITR will be treated as invalid, and is not taken up for processing.
  • Case transferred to Assessing Officer: This is the status when the CPC has transferred your ITR to your jurisdictional AO. If your case is transferred to your AO, you will be contacted by the officer to provide necessary details.

ITR status

Let’s decode each one in detail to assist you while checking the ITR status next time.

  • ITR Filed
Your return has been filed with the income tax department, but the same has not yet been verified. A return is complete and valid only when it is verified within 30 days of filing. You can either e-verify your return online or sign and send it to CPC Bengaluru. To know how to verify your return, visit here.
  • Pending for e-verification
It means your return has been filed but not yet e-verified yet.
  • Successfully e-verified
Your return has been filed with the department and you have successfully verified the same. Now, the Tax authorities will process the same.
  • Under Processing
The tax department works on analyzing, i.e., making an assessment of the ITR filed.
The authorities will check whether you disclosed correct information, whether there is any refund payable or tax demand, whether there is any error in the return filed, etc.
  • Return processed and refund paid
It’s time to celebrate, as it means the tax authorities have checked your return and issued a refund. The refund has been either successfully credited to your bank account or a cheque has been issued to you. This marks the closure of the process of ITR status as no more follow-up is further required.
  • Processed, refund determined, and sent to refund banker
After processing your return, if the income tax department concludes that a refund is payable to you, it shall issue the same. This status means that your refund has been processed, the refund amount has been checked, and an order to credit it to your account has been issued by the department to banking authorities. Your refund is between banking channels and shall be reflected in your account in a couple of days!!
  • Return processed with No demand and No refund
The ITR you filed for the year has been processed by the income tax authorities and calculation for tax has been made. The authorities found that neither the refund was payable to you nor you are liable to pay any taxes. The TDS or advance tax you paid is equal to the tax required to be paid for the year.
  • Return processed and tax demand determined
Well, this is not good news. The IT authorities, after processing your return, saw that you had deposited lower taxes than you were required to do. This may be because you have claimed any wrong deduction or exemption, or it might be because you forgot to include any income or as a result of any clerical error. You will now be required to pay the balance taxes with interest applicable or file rectification of ITR.
  • Processed and refund cheque returned unpaid
This means the refund due to you exceeded Rs. 50,000/- hence, it was issued through cheque. The cheque so issued has returned back to the department undelivered. It might be because no one was available at the delivery address to receive the cheque or the address mentioned in ITR was found to be incorrect. In this case, you will be required to place a refund reissue request. The request can be placed online.

Where can I find my acknowledgement number to enter when checking my ITR status?

  • You can check your acknowledgement number from your ITR-V received on your registered email after e-Filing your return. Your ITR-V is also downloadable from the e-Filing portal post login: e-File > Income Tax Returns > View Filed Returns > Download Receipt option.
