How to activate or deactivate ERI for ITR Filing?

    Updated on: 18 Jul, 2024 12:42 PM

Filing ITR is easier if you do it through some ERIs (E-Return Intermediaries), such as Tax2win. However, you can keep only one ERI activated on the Income Tax Portal at a time. If you filed a previous ITR through a different ERI and forgot to deactivate it, you might encounter issues when trying to file through a new ERI, as the OTP won't generate due to the previous ERI still being active. In this guide, you will learn how to easily activate or deactivate your Electronic Return Intermediary (ERI) for Income Tax Return (ITR) filing with our step-by-step guide. Ensure smooth tax filing with clear instructions and useful tips.

How to Deactivate ERI on Income Tax Portal?

Let's start with how you can deactivate ERI on your Income Tax Portal, as it is the most important process if you are not able to file your ITR through new ERIs. Deactivate ERI as steps given below:

    • Step 1. Login through the official Income Tax Portal.
    • Step 2. Take the cursor to ‘Authorised Partners’ on the top tab menu, and click on ‘My e-Return Intermediary.’

    • Step 3. On the next screen, you will see a list of active and inactive ERIs. To switch to a new ERI, you must deactivate the current active ERI by clicking on the ‘Deactivate’ button next to it. You will be asked to confirm your choice to deactivate the ERI. Click on the ‘Confirm’ button, and your active ERI will be deactivated immediately.
      • Once complete, you'll see a confirmation on the screen. You'll also receive a confirmation SMS to your registered mobile number and email.

Note:- To reset your income tax password and login on the ITD website, you can refer to the steps here.

How to Activate ERI on Income Tax Portal?

The process of activating the ERI on the Income Tax Portal is similar to the deactivation process mentioned above. Follow the steps below to activate ERI:

    • Step 1. Click on the ‘Inactive’ tab to view the list of inactive ERIs.
    • Step 2. Find the inactive ERI you wish to activate and click the ‘Activate’ button next to it.
    • Step 3. On the next screen, fill in the ‘Valid Till’ box with the desired validity period.

Note: You can choose a validity period for your ERI selection, ranging from a minimum of seven days to a maximum of one year. However, it can't be longer than the ERI's overall validity period

    • Step 4. Click on the “Add” button to proceed and then click "Confirm" to complete the activation.

A confirmation message along with the transaction number will be displayed on the screen, and an SMS will also be sent to your registered mobile number and e-mail address.
