How to Reset Your e-filing Password? A Step-by-step Guide

E-filing of an income tax return is a one-time activity that has to be done once every financial year. Having said that, it is also common to forget the e-filing portal password sometimes. If you have also forgot your e-filing portal password, don’t worry. You can reset your password and log in to your income tax account. This guide provides the step-by-step process to reset the password of the e-filing portal.

How to Reset eFiling Password

Here are the detailed steps to reset the e-filing password on your income tax portal -

  • Step 1: Visit income tax filing website
  • Step 2: Find the ‘Login’ button at the right corner of the screen and click on it.

  • Step 3: Enter your User ID and click the 'Continue' button. Individual taxpayers can use either their PAN or Aadhaar (if linked). Other taxpayers should use their PAN as the User ID.

  • Step 4: After entering your User ID and clicking 'Continue' to reach the login page, click on the 'Forgot Password' button. This will take you to the next page.

  • Step 5: Fill in the User ID and click on the ‘Continue’ button.

  • Step 6: After entering your User ID, you will be taken to the "Reset Password" dashboard. Here, you can choose one of the four options and provide the required details. Select the option that suits you best and click the 'Continue' button.

e-Filing Password Reset Using OTP on Mobile Number Registered with Aadhaar

The taxpayer can select the option 'OTP on the mobile number registered with Aadhaar' and follow these steps:

  1. On the next screen, click 'Generate OTP' and then the 'Continue' button. If you already have an OTP, select 'I already have an OTP on the mobile number registered with Aadhaar' and enter the OTP.
  2. In the 'Verify Your Identity' step, check the declaration box and click 'Generate Aadhaar OTP'.
  3. Enter the six-digit OTP received on your registered mobile number and click 'Verify'.
  4. Enter a new password in the 'Set New Password' and 'Confirm Password' fields, then click 'Submit'.
  5. Your password will be reset successfully.

e-Filing Password Reset Using Digital Signature

The taxpayer can use their unique registered Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) to log in to their e-filing account. Follow these steps to reset your password using your DSC:

  1. Select the option 'Upload Digital Signature Certificate' and click the 'Continue' button.
  2. On the next screen, select either 'New DSC' or 'Registered DSC', whichever applies to you. Then, click the 'Continue' button.
    Note:
    • If you already have a DSC registered on the e-Filing portal, select 'Registered DSC'.
    • If you do not have a DSC registered on the e-Filing portal, select 'New DSC'.
  3. In the next step, download the emSigner utility. After completing the installation, click the 'Continue' button.
  4. Select the provider, certificate, and provider password, then click the 'Sign' button.
  5. In the next step, enter a new password in the ‘Set new password’ and ‘Confirm password’ checkboxes. Then, click on submit.
  6. The password is reset successfully.

e-Filing Password Reset Using OTP Method

The taxpayer can use the OTP (one-time password) sent to their registered mobile number and email ID to change their password. Follow these steps to reset your password using this option:

  1. Select the option 'Use e-filing OTP' and click the 'Continue' button.
  2. On the next screen, enter your date of birth in the specified format and click 'Continue'.
  3. You will receive an OTP on your registered mobile number and email ID. Enter both OTPs and click the 'Verify' button.
  4. Next, enter a new password in the 'Set New Password' and 'Confirm Password' fields, then click the 'Submit' button.
  5. Your password will be reset successfully.

The last date to file ITR for FY 2023-24 is 31st July 2024. Make sure you file your ITR before this date to avoid penalties and notices.
