Updated on: 09 Sep, 2024 03:56 PM

It is mandatory for companies having a turnover of more than Rs.20 lakhs upon buying and selling goods to complete GST registration. Once the registration is complete, every taxpayer is assigned a unique identification number, which is known as GSTIN. This article explores what GSTIN is, its benefits, how to search it by PAN number, and its format.

What is GSTIN?

Goods and Services Tax Identification Number or GSTIN is a unique identification number that is allotted to every taxpayer who is registered under the GST regime. This number can be searched either by name or by PAN.

One business entity can have many GSTINs for its different branches. You need a separate GSTIN when dealing with a business from a different state or Union Territory in India. The companies already registered under the previous laws were automatically transferred to the GST system and given their GSTIN. In contrast, the new registrants received new GST numbers.

Why is GSTIN Important?

GSTIN plays an important role in claiming refunds and filing GST returns. Given below are the benefits of GST number -

  • Availing Input Tax Credit - Input tax credit is the GST paid on the purchase of goods or input services in the course of business. Therefore, you need to have a GSTIN to claim your input tax credit from GST payable on sales.
  • Filing of GST Returns - GST returns such as GSTR-1, GSTR-3, GSTR-9, and others are required to be filed under the GST Act. In order to file these returns, it is important to have a valid GSTIN. Before filing GSTR, it is also essential to verify the GST number by name or PAN.
  • Claiming of Refunds - Under the GST Act, one can claim a refund under various provisions such as export services, supply to SEZ unit, etc. Therefore, it is vital to have a GSTIN with proper verification to claim a refund.
  • General Requirements - The GST identification number is the mandatory registration number. Therefore, it is necessary to obtain GSTIN after being registered under the GST Act.

What is the Format of GST Number?

The GST identification number assigned to an entity is in a specific format. The GST number format is given below.

The GST number is a 15-digit alphanumeric number wherein -

  • The first two digits represent the state code of the business. It is based on the place where the business is located. A state code can range from 1-35.
  • The next ten digits, i.e., digits 3-12 in the GST number, represent the PAN number of the individual registered under GST.
  • The 13th digit is the ‘Registration number’. This number denotes the total number of registrations done with the same PAN. The maximum number of registrations that can be done is 35. This number can either be from 1-9. If the number of registrations exceeds 9, then you can use the alphabet. For example, number 1 will be used for the first registration, and A will be used for the 10th registration.
  • The 14th digit is denoted by ‘Z’ as default. This is common for all GST numbers.
  • The 15th digit, i.e., the last digit of the GST number, is the check code used to detect any errors.
