Value - Definition & explanation of Value | What is Value?

What is Value?

The concept of value encompasses the monetary, material, or perceived worth of a good, asset, or service. It underpins numerous financial terms,  such as shareholder value (focusing on investor returns), firm value (considering the entire company's worth), fair value (representing an unbiased market price), book value (based on accounting records), enterprise value (including debt), net asset value (NAV) (focusing on a company's underlying assets minus liabilities), etc.

Understanding Value in Finance

In finance, the concept of value goes beyond simple quantity to represent the worth of an asset, company, or its overall financial health. Investors, analysts, and executives use various financial metrics to estimate and forecast a company's value.  One common approach is based on earnings per share (EPS), which divides a company's profit by its outstanding shares, essentially indicating the profit generated per share owned by investors.

Valuation is the process of determining this worth through calculations and analysis.  It can encompass both the overall value of a company and the fair value of its individual shares.  Equity analysts leverage valuation techniques to assess whether a company's stock price is fairly priced, undervalued (potentially a good investment opportunity), or overvalued (potentially overpriced). This analysis hinges on comparing the company's financial performance to its current stock price.
